A despicable child sex offender has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for heinous sexual assaults.

Lee Aunger, of Denebridge Row, a convicted paedophile, was said to have caused significant harm to a young girl, and she continues to struggle with the trauma of his actions.

At Teesside Crown Court on Friday, May 22, Aunger, aged 37, received a 17-year prison sentence following his conviction after a trial at Durham Crown Court earlier that March.

He was found guilty of rape, seven counts of sexual assault, and one count of inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activities.

Prosecutor Dan Cordey highlighted during sentencing that the jury's verdicts mark Aunger as “an offender of particular concern,” despite having no prior criminal record.

Mr.

Cordey relayed that the victim reported difficulties at school due to the defendant’s offending, stating she struggled with concentration and academic work.

In his defense, lawyer Caroline McGurk told the court: “He maintains his innocence but is very anxious that his stance not be mistaken for defiance.

He wishes me to convey that he respects the jury’s decision, despite the devastating consequences for him.” She also noted that Aunger has a history of good character and long-term employment, with numerous references attesting to his positive traits.

Judge Nathan Adams described Aunger's actions as driven by “his own sexual gratification,” and emphasized that the severe sentence was justified given the extensive harm inflicted on the young victim, who remains affected by what happened.

The judge stated, “I am sure her suffering will persist for a long time.” Aunger will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole, and release will depend on assessments by the Parole Board confirming it is safe.

He will also be mandated to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 25 years.

Additionally, a restraining order has been issued to protect the victim for the same duration.

Furthermore, Aunger will be referred to the sexual offender register, preventing him from working with children at any point in the future.
