MAN JAILED FOR EIGHT YEARS AFTER VIOLENT ROBBERIES AGAINST THE ELDERLY
The case involving multiple robberies started after police received reports of an elderly woman, aged 96, being violently assaulted and robbed of her jewelry at her residence in Little Hulton. The woman, who has since died, was fond of visiting Manchester city center to walk and enjoy coffee with friends and family.
On August 1st, she was out for such a visit, meeting relatives for coffee.
Around 6 pm, she was preparing to leave and head home, taking a bus from Manchester Piccadilly that arrived near her home in Little Hulton at approximately 7:10 pm.
Kiril Mihaylov followed her from Piccadilly Gardens back to her address.
Upon entering her home, he forcibly snatched her necklace, pulling it from her neck.
She quickly sought help from a neighbour and called the police.
Local detectives from Salford’s Neighbourhood Crime Team initiated an immediate investigation, analyzing CCTV footage to find the suspect.
Later, on 26 August, an 82-year-old woman who enjoyed shopping and visiting cafés in the city center was also targeted.
After shopping, she decided to take a shortcut along Trinity Way, where she was punched in the stomach and pushed to the ground.
In a manner similar to the previous incident, Mihaylov grabbed her jewelry from her neck and tore earrings from her ears.
The woman, frightened, pleaded, ‘I’ll give it to you’.
Police swiftly responded, supporting the victim and collecting forensic evidence from her ears and neck, locations where her jewelry was forcibly taken.
DNA results confirmed Mihaylov as a suspect.
CCTV footage obtained by officers showed a masked man following the victim from the city center.
Recognizing similarities between this and the earlier robbery, investigators linked the cases.
On August 27th, police responded to a burglary at a home in Salford reported by an 80-year-old man.
He returned from shopping around 3 pm to find his home ransacked two hours later at 5 pm.
When he went upstairs, he noticed his valuable watch missing and saw a man with a large knife standing inside.
The intruder calmly exited the house and ran off.
Further evidence from CCTV and previous cases led to Mihaylov’s arrest for two robberies and a burglary.
A search of his home uncovered clothing matching items worn during the offenses.
Officers seized Mihaylov’s mobile phone, which contained images of stolen goods, plans for selling them, and evidence of sending a stolen Omega watch to Bulgaria.
The watch was traced to Mihaylov’s family in Bulgaria and was recovered thanks to coordination with international law enforcement, reuniting it with its rightful owner.
Kiril Mihaylov, born October 3, 1994, residing on Hamilton Road, was sentenced on March 3, 2025, at Manchester Crown Court to eight years in prison for the two robberies and the residential burglary.
