2006: TEENAGER JAILED FOR MURDER OF 10-YEAR-OLD
2006: A teenager described as aimless was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of at least 15 years at Liverpool Crown Court after being convicted of murdering his 10-year-old neighbor.Kieron Smith, who was 18 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of killing Lauren Pilkington-Smith in woodland near their residences in Leigh, Greater Manchester, last July.
The presiding judge, Mr Justice Mackay, highlighted that Smith had betrayed the trust of the girl, who thought of him as a friend.
He characterized Smith’s lifestyle as aimless and expressed regret over losing "a gem of a girl." The judge also pointed out that Smith, who had left school at 13, provided no explanation for his violent assault.
Evidence showed that Smith had participated in a cricket game with others on the night of the incident and initially claimed he went home for supper afterward.
However, witness statements and traces of blood on his trainers proved otherwise.
During the attack, Smith partially stripped Lauren, stuffing a sock into her mouth and inserting two twigs into her nostrils.
Police investigations found no signs of sexual assault, and authorities believe the true motives behind the crime will remain unknown.
The court described Smith’s conduct as extraordinarily wicked, noting he exploited his understanding of social cues to gain Lauren’s trust before betraying her in a barbaric manner.
