ESSEX MAN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC DOG TORTURE ON TRAIN
A man identified as Kieran Milledge has been sentenced to jail for cruelty to animals after a horrifying incident on a Greater Anglia train between Braintree and Witham in Essex. The court heard that Milledge, 22, of no fixed address, spent approximately 20 minutes physically abusing his dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Ronnie.
The abuse involved swinging the dog against the side of a train with such force that the animal died shortly afterward.
During the attack, Milledge hung Ronnie by his lead, swung him against the train wall, and then pushed his foot into the dog’s face.
CCTV footage showed the brutal nature of the assault, and the dog was so distressed that it defecated on the train seat.
The footage was circulated publicly, leading to Milledge being identified by police and subsequently pleading guilty to causing unnecessary harm to an animal and possessing an offensive weapon.
The court described the attack as amounting to torture and sentenced Milledge to 21 weeks in prison, the maximum allowable under current law, and banned him from keeping animals for life.
Additionally, he received sentences for possessing a bladed article and breaching a suspended sentence, which will run concurrently, resulting in a total of eight months behind bars.
The British Transport Police arrested Milledge and welcomed the sentence, with Detective Sergeant Steven Maguire condemning the cruelty and emphasizing the importance of the lifelong ban.
The incident sparked widespread outrage, with prominent charities like Dogs Trust criticizing the limited sentencing guidelines, calling for increased penalties reflecting the severity of animal cruelty crimes.
The court also noted that Milledge was kept in custody for his own protection due to death threats received following the footage’s release.
Public support and media attention led to his swift identification and court appearance.
