VIOLENT MAN JAILED FOR 'MOST APPALLING CAMPAIGN OF ABUSE' COURT HAD EVER SEEN
A man described as 'dangerous' and violent, who conducted one of the most severe campaigns of abuse ever seen by a court, has received an 18 and a half year prison sentence.Michael Maughan, aged 27, repeatedly raped his victim and made threats to take her to Epping Forest in Essex to kill her, according to police reports.
The vulnerable young woman suffered episodes of intense violence, including being slapped, punched, beaten, and thrown to the ground by Maughan.
He also confiscated her car keys, preventing her from leaving dangerous situations.
Maughan admitted to charges including controlling and coercive behavior, multiple counts of rape and sexual assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, as well as kidnapping and false imprisonment.
In April 2021, the couple stayed in hotels in Chiswick and Hammersmith, London, where the woman was subjected to abuse and assaults.
During this time, Maughan allegedly hit her with a chair and threw cough syrup at her, as reported by the Metropolitan Police.
Despite the assaults, she was too fearful to report non-consent in sexual activities.
Concerned for her safety, she confided in a friend, which led to a police report.
Officers swiftly began an investigation, attempting to locate both Maughan and the victim.
The woman was hiding from him, and Maughan was actively seeking her, including visiting a beauty salon in Edgware she frequented.
During this visit, he directed severe abuse and threats at staff, prompting one employee to resign out of fear he'd return.
On May 5, 2021, authorities raided an address on Effingham Road in Haringey after receiving intelligence that Maughan was there.
He was arrested on the scene.
Police also rescued the distressed victim, who had been held against her will.
During sentencing, HHJ Kaul QC described Maughan's actions as 'a campaign of the most appalling treatment many in this court may have seen.' She highlighted his dangerousness, especially concerning his conduct in sexual relationships with women.
Maughan is required to serve at least two-thirds of his prison term before being eligible for parole.
