MENTAL HEALTH PLEA AS KILLER SON GETS INDEFINITE HOSPITAL ORDER
A man from Manchester named Kieran Gallagher, aged 32, has been committed to an indefinite hospital order following his conviction for the murder of his mother at her residence in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire.During the hearing at Preston Crown Court, it was disclosed that Gallagher was experiencing paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the killing.
His mother, Bernadette Gallagher, who was 51 years old, was found dead with multiple stab wounds on April 10.
Gallagher had pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.
The court was informed that he was likely unconscious and possibly alive when he inflicted the fatal wound, removing her left lung rather than stabbing her in the heart as might be expected.
It was further revealed that days before the incident, authorities and family members had known about Gallagher’s previous acts of self-harm and his threats of violence.
He had also confessed to his aunt that he had done something sinful, and subsequently admitted to police that he had strangled his mother in the midst of an argument.
Gallagher expressed significant remorse for his actions, and the judge indicated that he would not be released without careful and thorough consideration.
The sentencing reflects the seriousness of the crime and takes into account his mental health state, with the court stating the ordeal his mother suffered was particularly tragic.
