KEVIN MATTHEWS SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS IN PRISON IN MANCHESTER FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN

In September 2017, a Manchester Crown Court judge commended the bravery of the victims whose testimonies led to the conviction of Kevin Matthews, a “cunning” and “manipulative” pedophile. Matthews, aged 49, was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment after being found guilty on eight counts, including rape and sexual assault. Despite his conviction, Matthews maintained his innocence, claiming his victims were “lying” and suggested they had “put on a performance” during the trial.

Judge Hilary Manley remarked, “The reality is it was you who was putting on a performance and the jury saw through that,” adding, “You are a cunning, manipulative and practised sexual abuser of young girls.” The judge also highlighted the bravery and resilience of the victims in coming forward and giving evidence against him.

The prosecution, led by Iain Simkin, explained that Matthews' abuse involved two girls over several years, with instances of violence or threats of violence accompanying the crimes. Mr. Simkin described the psychological and physical toll his actions had on the victims. One victim’s impact statement read, “I didn’t really have a childhood,” and added, “Every man who has come into my life is viewed as a potential abuser.”

Kevin Matthews, of Crescent Road, Crumpsall, has prior convictions for indecent assault and gross indecency with a child. During sentencing, Matthews, who appeared in court with the aid of a walking stick, was told he will serve two-thirds of his 22-year sentence in prison, with release only upon a decision by the Parole Board.

Judge Manley declared Matthews a ‘dangerous offender’ and ordered an extended sentence of eight years, which he will serve on licence after release, emphasizing that his release will depend on ongoing assessments. She expressed hope that his imprisonment might help his victims find a sense of closure.

Matthews was convicted of multiple charges, including three counts of sexual assault against a child, two counts of indecent assault of a child, two counts of rape, and one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
