CONTROLLING BULLY HANDED LIFE SENTENCE FOR HARINGEY WIFE MURDER
A man known for his controlling and aggressive behavior, who strangled his wife and then stabbed her 49 times in front of their young son, has been sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison for her murder.Kema Salum, aged 39, pleaded guilty to the killing of Leyla Mtumwa at their residence in Haringey, North London, in March.
Originally from Tanzania, Salum had been living in the UK on a six-month visa after marrying Ms.
Mtumwa in East Africa.
He received a life sentence from the Old Bailey court, with judge Richard Marks QC describing him as an "arrogant, controlling bully." Testimony revealed that Salum grew jealous after his wife socialized with friends the night before.
On the morning of March 30, he reportedly started strangling her during a "violent rage" at their home.
After a brief pause, he went to the kitchen and returned wielding a knife, which he used to stab Ms.
Mtumwa in her head, neck, body, and arms as her 12-year-old son begged him to stop.
When detained, Salum claimed he acted in self-defense.
Ms.
Mtumwa was pronounced dead at the scene.
Court proceedings also disclosed that Salum had displayed significant violence towards his ex-wife in the past.
Although the exact motive for the attack remains uncertain, Judge Richard Marks QC emphasized Salum’s arrogance and control issues, noting the suffering Leyla endured before her death.
Detective Inspector Dave Whellams, who led the investigation, stated that Salum’s true motive "still remains unknown," and expressed the hope that the sentence will help provide some closure for Leyla’s family, acknowledging that the circumstances leading up to the attack may never be fully understood.
