KEITH SAMUELS FROM LEAMINGTON SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR SERIAL RAPE AND CRIMES IN WARWICKSHIRE AND NORTHAMPTON

Keith Samuels, a 35-year-old man originally from Northampton, has been handed a severe sentence of nine life imprisonments by Mr. Justice Tucker at Nottingham Crown Court in 1999. The court's decision came after Samuels pleaded guilty to a series of heinous crimes, including seven counts of rape committed across four different towns, notably including Leamington. In addition to these sexual offenses, he admitted to a staggering 87 other criminal acts, which encompassed armed robbery, burglary, and cheque fraud, highlighting a pattern of extensive and violent criminal behavior spanning several years.

Between 1984 and 1990, Samuels targeted women in their own homes, employing threats and intimidation to carry out his assaults. His modus operandi often involved brandishing a knife, which he used to threaten his victims and coerce them into submission. He would warn them not to call the police, instilling fear and silence among those he attacked. One particularly distressing case involved a 34-year-old woman in Leamington, who was raped in her own bed after Samuels had previously terrorized women in other towns. This incident underscored the brutal nature of his crimes and his relentless pursuit of victims.

Beyond his sexual offenses, Samuels also engaged in other violent and criminal activities. He attempted an armed robbery at a post office, during which he brandished an imitation firearm, and he successfully robbed banks, accumulating over £2,500 in stolen money. His criminal activities came to a halt when he attempted to pay for sex using a dud cheque at a hotel in Rugby, which led to his arrest. This incident proved to be the turning point that brought his extensive criminal career to light.

During the court proceedings, five victims attended to witness the sentencing, some visibly emotional and crying as they saw their attacker being sentenced. The judge did not hold back in condemning Samuels, describing him as a man with no respect for property or the dignity of women. The court revealed the devastating impact of his crimes, including that two victims contracted venereal diseases and another had an abortion following their assault. The severity of his crimes was further emphasized by the court’s decision that he should not be considered for parole until he has served at least 18 years of his sentence.

Following his arrest, Samuels cooperated with authorities, admitting to a wide range of criminal activities, including armed robberies, house burglaries, and cheque frauds. His admissions painted a picture of a man whose criminal conduct was both extensive and persistent over several years, leaving a trail of trauma and fear in the communities he targeted.
