WALLSEND WOMAN KAYLIE PAOLOZZI SENT TO JAIL FOR INJURING BABY IN NORTH TYNESIDE
In a case that has shocked the community of Wallsend, Kaylie Paolozzi, a 20-year-old woman, has been sentenced to prison after being found responsible for causing serious injuries to a young child. The incident occurred at her residence on Burn Terrace in Wallsend, North Tyneside, and has raised concerns about child safety and the impact of substance abuse on caregiving abilities. On the early hours of April 4 this year, emergency services responded to a distress call from Paolozzi’s home. An ambulance was dispatched to her address, where paramedics found a baby suffering from multiple injuries. The child was immediately transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for urgent medical treatment. Medical examinations revealed a fractured arm, which was the primary injury linked to Paolozzi’s actions, along with other significant injuries including bruising to the face, a fracture to the temple bone, and a fractured rib. Swelling was also observed on the upper right arm, indicating the severity of the fracture.
During the court proceedings, it was emphasized that the full extent and cause of the injuries remained unclear. However, it was established that Paolozzi was responsible for the fracture to the child's arm. Prosecutor Amanda Ripon explained that Paolozzi had picked up the baby by the arm, causing it to twist and rotate in her grip, which resulted in the fracture. Despite the obvious distress of the child, Paolozzi failed to disclose the incident to medical professionals or police, and during her police interview, she offered no explanation or admission of guilt, claiming she had not caused the injury.
Defense attorney Caroline Goodwin highlighted Paolozzi’s struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, describing her as someone who was ill-equipped to care for a small child. She acknowledged the difficulty in determining the origins of the other injuries, but emphasized that the incident served as a wake-up call for Paolozzi, who was now motivated to make positive changes in her life. Goodwin also pointed out that Paolozzi had a troubled background, having grown up in a violent household, and had herself become a perpetrator of violence. She stressed that her client’s actions were not malicious but stemmed from her own vulnerabilities and lack of proper support.
Judge James Goss addressed the court, stating that the spiral fracture to the child's arm was caused by Paolozzi's reckless handling of the baby. He condemned the incident as a clear example of severe neglect and ill-treatment, noting that the injuries demonstrated a total disregard for the child's well-being. The judge acknowledged that Paolozzi’s substance abuse at the time played a significant role in her actions, which were compounded by the child's vulnerability due to her age and previous exposure to abuse. The court’s findings underscored the seriousness of the injuries and the need for accountability in protecting vulnerable children from harm.
