SOMERSET WOMAN INVOLVED IN HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE CASE SENTENCED
A woman named Katherine Reilly from Somerset was involved in a horrific child abuse case. She failed to report her baby's injuries after a brutal attack by her partner, Tom Kember, and was sentenced to a six-month jail term suspended for two years for child cruelty.
During the trial, it was revealed that Reilly made the decision not to seek medical attention for her severely injured infant, with the court describing her actions as 'wicked and spineless.' The court heard that the baby was just eight weeks old when Kember inflicted catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injury, and that there was an 80-minute window during which injuries could have been worsened.
Despite the child's extreme vulnerability due to premature birth and other health issues, Reilly did not act to help, instead showing a lack of remorse.
Kember was sentenced to 21 years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and evidence showed he was making disturbing internet searches related to harming the baby.
The child's injuries are life-limiting, and they are now adopted, suffering from blindness, seizures, and other complex needs.
The judge condemned Kember's actions and praised the resilience of the child and their adoptive family.
