MAN ON TRIAL FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AFTER STRANGLING GIRLFRIEND IN ST HELENS
UPDATE 25/11/2025: Karl Wexler, 44, of Dentons Green Lane, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday (Monday 24 November) after admitting attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and strangulation has been jailed for six years and two months................................................................................................................................................................................................................
A woman fled her flat "in terror" following an assault by her boyfriend, Karl Wexler, who allegedly attempted to murder her.
The court heard that Wexler throttled his partner so harshly that he broke his own finger.
According to court reports, Wexler told police "get here quick before I kill her," after throttling her with such force that he fractured his finger.
The victim, Clare King, managed to escape and sought refuge at a nearby social club, describing a "violent assault" she endured.
Wexler admitted during police interviews that he had strangled her with his thumb on her windpipe, pressing as hard as he could, and had even told officers that his intention was to kill her that night.
He also recounted that he had strangled her on more than one occasion, including a previous incident twelve months beforehand.
Despite initially admitting to attempting to kill her, Wexler now denies being guilty of attempted murder and is currently on trial at Liverpool Crown Court.
The prosecution argues that his own statements during police interviews demonstrate he intended to kill Clare King, and that he inflicted such ferocity that he suffered injury himself.
The case continues before Judge Gary Woodhall.
