CARE HOME WORKER WHO HID CAMERA IN TOILETS FOR MONTHS SAID 'I DID IT BECAUSE I WAS DIRTY'

A man who was inspired by online content covertly installed surveillance cameras in the toilets of the care home where he was employed.

Joshua Knights-Taylor, from Tan Y Bryn in St Asaph, Denbighshire, secretly recorded multiple women until he was eventually caught.

He admitted to voyeurism during an earlier court session in March.

On May 19, he appeared before a judge for sentencing after arriving late.

Court records indicated that between June and December 2021, Knights-Taylor worked as a care home assistant at a facility in Denbighshire.

Prosecutor Dafydd Roberts explained that a mobile phone, concealed within the toilet area and used to record those using it, was discovered by another staff member.

When confronted, the defendant confessed and was arrested; during police interview on New Year’s Eve, he made full admissions.

Knights-Taylor had written a confession stating, "I did it because I was dirty." He explained that he was not thinking clearly and admitted to operating the camera for several months.

Authorities examined the device and found videos from three different toilets collected over six months, totaling 37 recordings that included female staff members and a resident.

The defendant would set up the device at the beginning of his shift and take it with him when leaving.

The court was told that one woman featured in the recordings had resigned, and others, feeling violated and betrayed, were considering leaving their employment.

Defense lawyer Patrick Geddes argued that his client was young and facing a serious sexual offense, also noting his past mental health and sexual identity issues, though he emphasized these were not excuses.

He explained that Knights-Taylor was attempting to imitate content he saw online to achieve sexual gratification and was unable or unwilling to stop, often waiting to be caught.

The court heard that his actions would have permanent consequences, and Judge Niclas Parry condemned the behavior as a deliberate campaign of voyeurism, highlighting that it involved planning.

The judge described the crime as one likely to cause outrage, stating, "Over six months, while employed at a nursing home, you repeatedly misused your position by placing a phone inside staff toilets." Statements from the women filmed confirmed that his actions caused them significant distress and had severely impacted their sense of safety both at work and at home.

Knights-Taylor was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
