JOSHUA DAVITT FROM BEDFORD AND TINTAGEL SENTENCED FOR GROOMING GIRL IN WIDNES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Widnes, Bedford, and Tintagel, a man named Joshua Davitt has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving a young girl. The court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern of grooming and exploitation that spanned several years, beginning when the victim was just eight years old.According to court records, Davitt, who resides in Castle View, Tintagel, Cornwall, first encountered the girl during a family holiday. Their initial interactions were innocent and purely friendly, but over time, their relationship took a sinister turn. The grooming process was carried out through social networking sites, where Davitt, then 21 years old, manipulated the young girl, who was nine years his junior. The court heard that he used online platforms to build trust and influence her, gradually encouraging her to engage in sexual activities online.
Evidence presented in court detailed that Davitt traveled from his home in Bedfordshire on two separate occasions to meet the girl in Widnes. These meetings were part of his ongoing efforts to exploit her. Additionally, he encouraged her to perform sexual acts via online communication, further demonstrating his predatory behavior. The court also found that Davitt kept indecent photographs of the girl on his computer, which he possessed unlawfully.
The victim’s mother bravely addressed the court, describing the profound and lasting impact of Davitt’s actions on her daughter and their family. She spoke of her daughter’s ongoing struggles, including nightmares, disrupted sleep, severe mood swings, and episodes of uncontrollable crying. The mother expressed her anguish, stating, “Life has not been the same for any of us since November 2014 when I first discovered the extent and initial nature of my daughter’s online communication with Joshua Davitt.”
She further explained that despite her efforts to protect her daughter, the situation escalated, culminating in the events that led to Davitt’s arrest and trial. Her words conveyed a sense of helplessness and deep anxiety, as she admitted feeling like she had failed as a parent despite her best efforts to keep her child safe online. “It has weighed heavily on my mind and caused me endless anxiety. It feels like I have a huge knot in my stomach forever,” she said.
Judge Neil Flewitt, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of Davitt’s crimes and the impact on the victim and her family. He stated that the court had no choice but to impose a custodial sentence, acknowledging that the victim and her loved ones would require a long period of recovery. The judge highlighted the disturbing nature of the relationship, noting that the victim, who was only 13 at the time, believed she was in love with Davitt and considered herself to be in a relationship with him. He pointed out that Davitt, at 21, was significantly more mature and experienced, which he exploited to manipulate the young girl.
Judge Flewitt described the relationship as fundamentally unequal and predatory, emphasizing that Davitt took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability, her feelings for him, and her personal circumstances. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offences and the need to protect children from such exploitation, sending a clear message about the consequences of grooming and sexual misconduct.
