A survivor of domestic violence has been commended for her bravery after her attacker received a two-year prison sentence.

On the morning of May 5th, Joshua Cain, aged 38 and residing on Brassmill Lane in Newbridge, Bath, repeatedly contacted his former partner by phone, issuing threats before forcibly entering her residence near Bradford on Avon.

Cain then assaulted her by grabbing her wrists and throat, accompanied by further threats.

He searched her phone and subsequently committed another assault, slapping her multiple times in the face.

He also dragged her across the kitchen and strangled her against the wall, causing her to fear for her life.

While distracted by the phone search, the victim managed to contact a colleague who called the police.

In a personal statement given to the court, she explained her post-incident distress: “Since the offence, I have felt anxious and on edge.

I have been unable to sleep properly.

I wake several times a night, often not being able to fall back to sleep at all.

My usual routine has fallen apart.

I was a regular gym-goer but have not been since and don’t feel I can go now.

I don’t walk my dog alone anymore, and if there is no one to accompany me, I avoid walking her altogether.

I keep replaying the morning’s events inside my head.

I am plagued by feelings of shame and embarrassment.

I have lost confidence and withdrawn into myself.

I hesitate to go out and enjoy myself, feeling ashamed that someone I loved wanted to hurt me.” When police arrived, Cain escaped by jumping out of an upstairs window.

A chase on foot ensued, and he was later apprehended in a nearby field and taken into custody.

He faced charges of intentional strangulation, assault causing actual bodily harm, and criminal damage.

Cain pleaded guilty to these charges, and during a court session at Swindon Crown Court on Thursday, he was sentenced to two years in prison.

A five-year restraining order was also imposed.

Shonna O’Harney, a local crime investigator, stated: “This must have been an incredibly frightening and traumatic incident for the victim in her own home, likely affecting her sense of safety.

I want to commend her for coming forward and reporting the abuse to authorities.

Her strength during this process has been commendable and led to this sentencing.

We take domestic abuse reports seriously and will ensure law enforcement acts decisively against offenders.

If you are facing any form of domestic abuse, please do not hesitate to seek help.”
