JOSEPH CARRICK FROM CO DUBLIN AND WEXFORD SENTENCED TO PAY €4.7 MILLION TO VICTIMS IN SHOCKING CHURCH PAEDOPHILE CASE
In a highly distressing case that has shocked communities across Ireland, two women who endured horrific abuse at the hands of a neighbor and church choir member, Joseph Carrick, have been awarded a total of €4.7 million in damages. The abuse, which took place between 1970 and 1973, began when the victims were only 12 years old and continued over a period of several years, leaving lasting scars on their lives.Geraldine and Jacqueline, who knew Carrick through their involvement in the church choir, recounted the traumatic experiences they endured at his hands. Carrick, now aged 72 and residing in Blackrock, Co Dublin, chose not to contest the legal actions brought against him. The court proceedings revealed the extent of his heinous acts, which included repeated sexual violations.
Jacqueline O’Toole, who was awarded €4 million, testified that she became pregnant at the age of 15 as a direct result of Carrick’s assault. She was compelled to give up her infant daughter for adoption, a decision that has haunted her for years. Meanwhile, Geraldine, a mother of five, received €700,000 in damages. She described her ordeal as having “stolen her childhood,” emphasizing the profound impact the abuse has had on her entire life.
The High Court, after reviewing the evidence and the testimonies, ordered a freeze on Carrick’s assets to ensure the victims’ compensation. Legal representatives secured a court order preventing him from reducing his assets below €5 million. It was also revealed that Carrick owns multiple properties, including residences in Dublin and Wexford, which are now subject to the court’s restrictions.
This case has brought to light the disturbing reality of abuse within seemingly trusted community circles and underscores the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes. The court’s decision marks a significant step in holding perpetrators accountable and providing some measure of restitution to those who suffered at the hands of Joseph Carrick.
