JORDAN KHELIL
According to the court, he started by punching cupboards and tearing clothes from them before smashing a television set.
He then turned his aggression towards his partner, forcing her head against a wall and physically assaulting her.
Khelil has been in custody since Christmas Day following his arrest.
He admitted to charges of criminal damage and actual bodily harm.
Defence representative Marion Weir told the court that Khelil accepted he ‘snapped’ during the events at the victim’s home, a remand that has resulted in roughly six months of custody, which were already acting as a significant punishment.
The lawyer highlighted that Khelil suffers from ADHD and a personality disorder, which have impacted his behavior, but he has been receiving mental health treatment since being remanded in custody.
He also expressed a clear intention to avoid further contact with the victim.
Justice Julian Shaw explained that the incident likely stemmed from alcohol consumption and relationship tensions on Christmas Day.
The court was told that Khelil damaged property including a television and a light switch, and tore clothes from cupboards before throwing items at his partner and making offensive remarks.
He also broke her phone and threatened to kill her, making the incident particularly serious.
Despite his young age, the judge noted a troubling pattern of escalating violence in Khelil’s background, with indications that he can quickly become aggressive.
He was warned to learn how to control his fists and find non-violent ways to manage conflicts.
The judge sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with 25 days of rehabilitation activities and 60 hours of unpaid work.
A restraining order was issued to prevent any contact with the victim for three years.
Recorder Shaw urged Khelil to seek help and grow into a person who avoids resorting to violence in the future.
