EGREMONT MAN THREATENED TO KILL WOMAN AND BURN DOWN HER HOME

An man from Egremont has been found guilty of subjecting a woman to over a month of harassment, which included making threats to kill her.

During a hearing at Workington Magistrates’ Court, 36-year-old Damon Sim admitted to the charges that occurred between Christmas last year and February 2, as per court documents.

The charge stated that: "Between December 25, 2025, and February 2, 2026, at Cleator Moor, the defendant caused [the female victim] to fear that he would use violence against her through his conduct, which he knew or should have known would induce fear of violence...." Prosecutors explained that on multiple occasions, Sim sent messages, made phone calls, and left voicemails that were abusive and threatening.

The allegations included threats to kill her, inflict injury, and damage her home, including an intention to set it on fire.

His actions were considered an offence under the 1997 Protection from Harassment Act.

After reviewing the case details, the magistrates sentenced Sim to 24 weeks in prison, but the term was suspended for 18 months due to their belief that there was a genuine chance for rehabilitation.

The suspension was granted because they deemed the circumstances suitable for reform.

Residing at Brisco Mount, Egremont, Sim was employed and had a history of compliance during previous community sentences, which the Probation Service supported.

As part of his court orders, Sim must undergo non-residential drug rehabilitation supervised by Recovery Steps in Whitehaven, including providing three drug samples every three months.

Additionally, he is required to participate in up to 27 days of rehabilitation activities coordinated by the Probation Service and is subject to a restraining order that bans any contact with the victim through any means, including social media.

He is also prohibited from entering the street in Cleator Moor where she resides.

This restraining order will stay in effect until September 3, 2027.

The magistrates emphasized that the order is "necessary and proportionate to protect the victim from ongoing risk of harm and distress." The defendant’s guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing, according to the presiding magistrate.

Sim was represented in court by defence lawyer Claire Kirkpatrick.
