LIVERPOOL MAN SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND BITING ATTACK
Jonathon Derby, a 37-year-old man with a history of domestic violence, was involved in a violent assault on his former partner at her flat on May 25 this year, just a month after their split.During the incident, Derby, who had been drinking, reacted aggressively when she refused to kiss him after he visited her to talk.
He then grabbed her by the head, shook her, and bit her on her left arm and back.
The victim fell to the floor, where she pleaded with Derby to stop as he sat on top of her.
Derby then left the flat to buy more alcohol.
The victim later reported the assault to police two days afterward.
Prosecutor Andrew McInnes described her as being 'scared, traumatised and frightened' and noted she was still suffering the effects of the attack.
Derby, who has a record of 16 convictions for 25 offences including previous violence against an ex-partner, changed his plea at the last minute to admit to assault causing actual bodily harm.
Judge Andrew Menary sentenced him to 16 months in prison and issued a two-year restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim.
The judge also commented on Derby's actions, saying, 'an unpleasant thing for anybody to do, never mind an adult man,' referring to the biting.
Derby, a father of four, has demonstrated some positive behavior by completing a welding course in custody, which could lead to employment upon his release.
His prior convictions show a significant gap of ten years between offenses, which he has taken as a sign of his ability to stay out of trouble.
He has been in custody for nearly five months, equivalent to a 10-month sentence, and expressed hope to see his children again after his release.
