EDWARD OWINGS FROM HALEWOOD SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN LIVERPOOL
In a serious case that has shocked the local community, Edward Owings, a 52-year-old man from Halewood, was found guilty of possessing a significant number of indecent images of children. Owings, who previously served as the manager of a community centre operated by Halewood town council, was arrested on December 13 of the previous year following a detailed investigation into his online activities.Authorities from the specialized abusive images unit conducted a raid on Owings' residence after tracing his computer activity to a website hosting illegal content. The investigation revealed that his device was among many that accessed a hijacked UK website on March 6 of the previous year. This hijacked site had been manipulated by cybercriminals to distribute a disturbing collection of child pornography, with a total of 2,393 illicit images uploaded for public download.
According to reports, Owings accessed this website at approximately 3:42 a.m., in a span of less than a minute, viewing dozens of these repulsive images. When his laptop was seized during the arrest, investigators discovered a total of 2,935 images and videos depicting child abuse, highlighting the extent of his involvement.
During the court proceedings, Judge David Hale addressed Owings directly, emphasizing the gravity of possessing such material. He stated, “Indecent images are prohibited for very good reason because someone, somewhere is abusing children and profiting from their abuse because people in this country and elsewhere are prepared to look at these images. Somewhere there are many children who will suffer very severely and permanently, and to think you viewed that for your own pleasure – that is why it is wrong and that is why it is an offence.”
Despite the severity of the charges, the judge expressed the belief that Owings should be given an opportunity for rehabilitation. He ordered Owings to participate in the Northumbria Sex Offender programme, aiming to help him understand the gravity of his actions and prevent any future offenses. The court sentenced him to a three-year community order with supervision, and mandated that he sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years. Additionally, Owings was required to undergo the sexual offenders’ programme for the same period.
Owings, who resides on Blakeacre Road in Halewood, admitted to nine counts of making indecent images between July 2007 and December 2010. His defense lawyer, Ian Harris, expressed remorse, stating, “He is a man who is thoroughly ashamed of himself.” The case has raised concerns about online safety and the importance of monitoring digital activity, especially among individuals in positions of trust within local communities.
