MAN WHO MURDERED EX-GIRLFRIEND IN HOSPITAL KNIFE ATTACK JAILED FOR LIFE
A man found guilty of stabbing his ex-partner to death at Blackpool Victoria Hospital has received a life sentence, having previously been charged with raping her.Jonathan Vass, aged 30, who worked as an ambulance technician and had a background as a bouncer, was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison for the murder of Jane Clough, a 26-year-old nurse and mother of his child.
The court was informed that Vass was scheduled to stand trial on nine counts of rape and had murdered Clough to prevent her from testifying against him.
Despite the charges, he was released on bail, which Clough’s family publicly opposed.
Judge Anthony Russell QC described the murder as an act that was "more than 14 years in the making" and imposed a life sentence with a 30-year minimum before parole eligibility.
The case revealed that Clough was discovered with multiple stab wounds outside the hospital on July 25 and died after being admitted to the emergency department where she worked.
The judge characterized the murder as "deliberate, brutal, and callous," motivated by feelings of hatred and revenge, and noted that Vass showed no remorse.
Evidence presented in court included Clough’s diary, which contained fears about Vass’s revenge and the possibility of harm.
Prosecutor Dennis Watson QC stated that Vass’s primary motive was to prevent her from providing evidence in court.
The court also heard that Vass was jealous, controlling, and involved with other women, having threatened her life if she were to confront him.
Clough had previously reported abuse to the police, and her diary reflected her anxiety about Vass’s intentions.
Following the public disclosure of her rape and abuse allegations, Vass chose to act violently.
Detective Neil Esseen confirmed that Vass’s motive was to stop Clough from testifying.
The court acknowledged Clough’s family, highlighting her positive qualities and lamenting the brutality that left her infant daughter motherless.
