JONATHAN LIEBLING SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE IN READING
In a case that has shocked the community of Reading, Jonathan Liebling, a 54-year-old man with a history of activism and professional background as a psychiatric nurse, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a teenage girl. The incident, which spanned over several months, culminated in his sentencing at Reading Crown Court on Friday, May 6.
According to court proceedings, Liebling, who resides on Mount Pleasant in Reading, engaged in a disturbing pattern of grooming and abusing a minor girl.
His misconduct began in September 2020, when he systematically isolated the girl from her family and friends, creating an environment of dependency and control.
During this period, he supplied her with cannabis and alcohol, despite her being under the age of 16, further entrenching his manipulative tactics.
The court heard that over a four-day period in July 2021, Liebling sexually assaulted the girl multiple times, including acts of rape and penetration.
The grooming process involved the use of a Class B drug, which he used to manipulate and control his victim.
Despite the girl’s mother raising concerns and repeatedly requesting social services and police to investigate Liebling’s behavior, her pleas were reportedly dismissed or ignored, leaving her vulnerable to further abuse.
Liebling, who publicly describes himself as an ‘anti-misogynist’ and a ‘humanist’ on his social media profiles, attempted to justify his actions during the trial by claiming he was the girl’s ‘saviour’ because she was ‘out-of-control.’ However, the jury rejected his defense, finding him guilty of multiple sexual offenses, including two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, sexual assault, supply of a Class B drug, and intimidation of witnesses.
Reading Crown Court Judge Nott delivered a stern sentence, condemning Liebling’s predatory and calculated behavior.
The judge emphasized the severe psychological harm inflicted upon the victim, stating that her trauma would likely require months or even years to recover from.
The judge also criticized Liebling’s lack of remorse and empathy, describing his conduct as targeted and planned.
As a result, Liebling was sentenced to a total of 27 years in prison.
He will be eligible for parole after serving fourteen years, contingent upon the decision of the parole board.
Additionally, he will remain on license for the remainder of his sentence, ensuring supervision and restrictions upon his release.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Reading, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the need for effective safeguarding measures to protect vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
