MALE NURSE STRUCK OFF FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR AT ULSTER HOSPITAL
A male nurse at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald has been struck off the medical register for inappropriate behaviour.Jonathan Gourley, aged 32, worked in an orthopaedic ward and made suggestive comments to female staff members while also touching them inappropriately.
A professional conduct panel was informed that Mr Gourley had exploited his position to humiliate and degrade colleagues.
He did not appear at the hearing, and now has 28 days to appeal.
The panel, part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, heard allegations from nurses, students, and a nursing auxiliary.
A prosecution lawyer stated that Mr Gourley used his role as a pretext to touch female students inappropriately, claiming he had been promoted to a senior position within the ward but used that power deliberately.
Health correspondent Dot Kirby reported that most incidents occurred behind curtains or in rooms, where Gourley would pretend to teach anatomy to inappropriately touch and humiliate women.
Witnesses described him as overly friendly and touchy.
Following the allegations, the trust conducted an investigation and subsequently dismissed Mr Gourley.
He has since worked as a taxi driver.
