NORTH YORKSHIRE MAN JAILED FOR REVENGE PORN UPLOAD
John O’Neill, a 22-year-old man from Colburn in North Yorkshire, was sentenced to six months in prison after uploading explicit videos of himself engaging in sexual acts with a victim to a pornography website without her permission. The crime was only discovered when a friend recognized the victim in one of the videos and notified her.
Following the revelation, O’Neill was arrested and admitted to uploading the videos, claiming it was done with her consent.
The Crown Prosecution Service dismissed his claim after assessing evidence from North Yorkshire Police, leading to charges of disclosing private sexual images or videos without consent with the intent to cause distress.
Although initially scheduled for trial, O’Neill changed his plea to guilty in May of the previous year and received the sentence at York Crown Court this week.
In addition to the jail term, he was ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
Detective Constable Stephen Peachman commented on the case, emphasizing that revenge porn can significantly harm victims and their families, causing long-lasting emotional and physical damage.
He highlighted that the sharing of such private content without consent can lead to fear, isolation, and even suicidal thoughts among victims.
Peachman stated that the sentence sends a firm message to victims and assured that law enforcement will pursue justice in such cases.
He also encouraged victims to contact police, promising a serious investigation.
The victim in this case can take some solace in knowing that justice has been served, allowing her to begin moving past her traumatic experience.
