GRAHAM WILLIAMSON FROM COLBURN ESCAPES JAIL AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO CHILD IMAGE OFFENSES IN TEESSIDE

In a case that has shocked the local community of Colburn, Graham Williamson, a 55-year-old resident of Peppermint Drive in Colburn, Catterick Garrison, was brought before Teesside Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The proceedings revealed that Williamson had accumulated an alarming collection of over 18,000 images and videos depicting children, a fact that has raised significant concern among authorities and residents alike.

According to court reports, Williamson was discovered to be in possession of a staggering total of 18,433 photographs and 11 videos featuring children. The discovery was made after a staff member at the hotel where Williamson was employed noticed suspicious activity and promptly alerted the police. This intervention led to a police investigation that uncovered the extensive collection of illicit material stored on Williamson’s computer.

During the court hearing, it was disclosed that Williamson had previously been convicted of similar offences in November 2011, for which he received a suspended sentence. Despite this prior conviction, he continued to engage in activities involving indecent images of minors. Williamson admitted to police that he had watched some of the videos found on his device, but claimed that he intended to delete them the day after his arrest, which took place on March 18 of the previous year.

Graham Brown, representing Williamson, provided a mitigating statement, explaining that out of the 18,433 images, fewer than 10,000 were classified as indecent. He emphasized that the majority of the images depicted clothed individuals posing erotically, rather than explicit unclad images. Brown also highlighted that since Williamson’s previous suspended sentence, he had shown significant progress in his participation in a sexual offender treatment program. He asserted that there was no evidence to suggest further offending and that Williamson’s risk to the community could be effectively managed.

Despite these arguments, Judge George Moorhouse sentenced Williamson to 12 weeks in prison, a sentence that was suspended for two years. The court also imposed an 18-month supervision order, requiring Williamson to adhere to conditions including completing 150 hours of unpaid work and observing a curfew from 8pm to 8am. Williamson pleaded guilty to 27 charges of making indecent images and seven charges of possessing such images, leading to the court’s decision to impose these penalties. The case has once again brought to light the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in tackling the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, especially in small communities like Colburn.
