CARLISLE MAN GETS SEVEN YEARS ON SEX REGISTER FOR ASSAULTING HOSPITAL STAFF
A 78-year-old man from Lazonby Terrace, Carlisle, named John O'Neill, has been put on the Sex Offender Register for a period of seven years following his admission to sexually assaulting four female hospital workers over five days last year at The Cumberland Infirmary. The offences occurred on consecutive days at the hospital, as detailed by prosecutor Diane Jackson in Carlisle's Rickergate court.
O'Neill entered guilty pleas to all four charges, which involved assaults while the victims were performing their public duties.
Magistrates sentenced him to an eight-week jail term, suspended for a year, and ordered him to be on the Sex Offender Register for the next seven years.
The court acknowledged his guilty pleas and considered the background provided by a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service.
They dismissed a suggestion for compensation due to the defendant's limited financial means and potential to cause additional distress.
The court stated that the offending misconduct justified custody because the victims were engaged in their work at the time.
