CARLISLE MAN HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
Police recovered images depicting children involved in sexual abuse from a mobile phone seized from a man in Carlisle.Daniel Lawton, 30 years old, received a suspended prison sentence from magistrates for crimes uncovered in August 2024.
Prosecutor George Shelley told the court during Lawton’s sentencing at Rickergate Magistrates’ Court: “Information from outside law enforcement agencies led Cumbria police to identify Mr.
Lawton as a suspect.” Following his arrest, Lawton was questioned, and a number of electronic devices, including a mobile phone, were confiscated.
The phone contained indecent images of children.
Among these images, five were classified as Category A — the most severe kind.
An additional five images fell into Category B, and six more were in Category C.
Lawton, who was living on Alexander Street in Carlisle, admitted to producing the 16 indecent images.
Defense attorney Mark Dallas, in mitigation, described Lawton as a man with a good previous character who would be eligible for a maximum one-third reduction in his sentence due to his early guilty plea.
The images were created over a brief period of about two weeks, in late May and early June 2023.
“It was an older mobile phone that contained screenshots, some of which were deleted but have been recovered by the IT investigation team,” explained Mr.
Dallas.
“There is no evidence to suggest anything was stored on other devices.” Lawton was “very candid” about what motivated his criminal actions.
“Such admissions are quite uncommon in cases like this,” Mr.
Dallas noted.
“There is a substantial degree of insight into what has happened.” He added that Lawton expressed genuine remorse and regret during discussions.
The magistrates suspended an eight-month prison sentence for two years.
Additionally, Lawton must complete up to 20 days of rehabilitative activities, as arranged by the probation service, which will focus on improving thinking skills.
He is also required to comply with a strict sexual harm prevention order and will be subject to sex offender registration requirements, meaning he must regularly update authorities with certain personal information.
