JOHN MERRITT OF HALEWOOD SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE IN BELLE VALE AND NETHERLEY
In April 2021, a tragic and disturbing case unfolded at Liverpool Crown Court involving John Merritt, a 60-year-old man from Leathers Lane, Halewood, who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed decades earlier. Merritt, a married father of four, faced charges related to the sexual abuse of two boys during the 1970s, crimes that he vehemently denied but which were supported by compelling evidence and testimonies.According to court proceedings, Merritt, who at the time of the offenses went by the name Walter Merritt, targeted two young boys in the areas of Belle Vale and Netherley. The abuse took place when Merritt was approximately 14 or 15 years old. The victims, identified as Boy A and Boy B, recounted their traumatic experiences, which included Merritt offering chocolate to Boy A before inviting him into his home. There, Merritt assaulted him in a bathroom and later in a nearby field. Boy B's account revealed that Merritt also raped him in a bathroom after his mother had invited him in for tea and cake, a gesture that Merritt exploited to lure the boy into a vulnerable situation.
Boy B described how the abuse had a lasting impact on his life, leading him down a destructive path that included theft and drug use as a means to numb the memories of his trauma.
