JOHN MAJILTON FROM TAYPORT CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN FIFE
In July 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving John Majilton, a postman from Tayport, who was found to have downloaded an extensive collection of child sexual abuse images. The investigation was initiated after police received a tip-off indicating that a computer at his residence, located in Kilmany, Fife, had accessed and possibly shared such illicit material online.Authorities conducted a thorough raid on Majilton’s home, which he shared with his partner and their two young children. During the search, they discovered that his computer contained a vast number of indecent images, contradicting his initial claims that he had only received a single set of images from online contacts, which he subsequently deleted. The police examination revealed that he had stored thousands of such images and had actively engaged in sharing them with others via Yahoo Messenger.
Fiscal depute Kirsten Letford provided detailed insights during the court proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court. She stated, “When he was asked to explain the presence of the images he said he had never harmed anyone. A full examination of the computer was undertaken. His recently accessed files suggested it contained indecent images of female children. Files were found containing photos of the faces of female celebrities superimposed on pornographic images. One showed a 15-year-old female celebrity superimposed on a naked adult female. Another depicted a 22-year-old celebrity superimposed on a child's body.”
She further explained that the images were classified into different categories based on their severity: six images at Category A, the most serious level; 29 at Category B; and a staggering 2,305 at Category C. Additionally, two videos were recovered from the device. The investigation also uncovered evidence that on February 1, 2015, Majilton exchanged indecent images with another user through Yahoo Messenger, indicating active participation in the distribution of such material.
Majilton, aged 32, residing on Cowgate in Tayport, pleaded guilty to charges of downloading indecent images of children between January 1, 2013, and October 26, 2015, at his address in Kilmany. He also admitted to distributing a child abuse image on February 1, 2015, at the same location.
During the court hearing, his defense solicitor, John Boyle, acknowledged the seriousness of the offense but emphasized that further social work assessments were necessary to determine the risk of reoffending. The sheriff, Alastair Carmichael, responded by imposing a community payback order with a supervision period of three years, mandating Majilton’s participation in a sex offender rehabilitation program, and imposing restrictions on his internet use and interactions with children. Furthermore, Majilton was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of three years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of swift action when such crimes are suspected. The community in Tayport and the wider Fife area remains vigilant, and authorities continue to pursue justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
