JOHN LYON'S CRIMES IN EDMONTON AND ENFIELD: SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE CASES REVEAL DEVASTATION
In a series of deeply disturbing criminal cases spanning over two decades, John Lyon, a man with a troubling history of child sexual abuse, has been convicted and sentenced for heinous acts committed in the London areas of Edmonton and Enfield. His crimes have left a trail of trauma among young victims, and his repeated offenses highlight a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior. In August 2023, Lyon, aged 50, was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Old Bailey, with a minimum term of 15 years, after pleading guilty to four counts of rape and seven counts of indecent assault. These charges pertain to a single girl who was only 11 years old when the abuse began in 2001. The victim, who had been known to Lyon, came forward in January 2021 to report the abuse, which had remained hidden for years. The court heard that Lyon's criminal conduct was not isolated; he had previously been convicted in 2013 for abusing two young girls aged 6 and 7, resulting in a 12-year prison sentence.
Further, in 2021, Lyon received an additional 11-year sentence for offenses committed against four girls aged between five and twelve years old, with these incidents occurring in north London between 1993 and 2013. These crimes, which spanned over two decades, were reported to police in 2018 and 2019, revealing a long history of predatory behavior.
Earlier in January 2021, Lyon, then 47 and residing with no fixed address, appeared at Wood Green Crown Court where he was sentenced to eleven years for further sexual offenses against young girls. During this hearing, Lyon admitted to three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14, three counts of sexual assault, and three counts of rape. The victims ranged in age from five to twelve, and the offenses took place in north London over a period from 1993 to 2013. The police investigation into these crimes was initiated after reports from victims in 2018 and 2019.
Back in November 2013, Lyon, then 40 and living in Edmonton, was sentenced to 12 years for sexual assaults committed against two girls aged six and seven during school holiday camps. The court also ordered Lyon to be placed on the sex offenders register for life and imposed an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order. The incidents occurred in 2012 when Lyon, working as a school caretaker, approached a seven-year-old girl attending a summer camp in Churchbury Lane, Enfield. He took her to a bathroom where he carried out a sexual assault. The girl later confided in her mother, leading to police involvement and the subsequent identification of a second victim, a six-year-old girl, who was assaulted by Lyon during the Easter holidays of 2012.
Lyon's criminal activities extended to his role as a caretaker at Saint Andrew’s Church of England Primary School in Churchbury Lane, Enfield. In February 2013, he was charged with child sex abuse and granted bail. During a court hearing, Lyon, then 39, did not speak but was warned that breaching bail conditions—specifically entering within 200 meters of the school—could result in a prison sentence. The charges included three counts of sexual assault, two against minors under 13, and one count of common assault. Lyon appeared again at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court in January 2013 and was scheduled to reappear at Wood Green Crown Court in March of that year.
Throughout these proceedings, authorities emphasized the betrayal of trust by Lyon, who exploited his position as a caretaker to commit these heinous acts. Detective Constable Mark Tester from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command stated that Lyon posed a significant risk to children, and the lengthy sentences reflect the severity of his crimes. The victims and their families have shown remarkable patience and resilience in the face of such prolonged abuse, and the justice system has responded with the utmost seriousness to hold Lyon accountable for his actions.
