AMBLE MAN JOHN HENDERSON SENTENCED FOR VILE CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN NORTHUMBERLAND
In May 2019, a deeply disturbing case emerged involving John Henderson, a man from Amble, Northumberland, who was convicted of a heinous series of sexual crimes against a young boy. Henderson, a Royal Navy sailor with 16 years of service, was revealed to be a predatory individual who exploited the innocence of a vulnerable child through a series of vile and manipulative acts.Despite his outward appearance as a trusted and respected member of the armed forces, Henderson’s true nature was far darker. He subjected the young victim to an ongoing campaign of sexual abuse, which included not only physical assaults but also the showing of disturbing videos depicting other children being abused. The abuse was so severe that Henderson even filmed his own horrific attacks, further evidencing the depravity of his actions.
The investigation into Henderson’s conduct was initiated after military police received credible information about his activities. A search of his mobile phone uncovered chat logs with the young boy, revealing explicit conversations and disturbing exchanges. Further scrutiny uncovered communications with an individual overseas, where Henderson made chilling comments such as, “Had sex with my little friend this morning,” and advised the other person to consider finding children among their acquaintances for similar acts.
Police also discovered multiple videos on Henderson’s device, some of which showed him abusing the young boy, including footage taken on the child’s birthday. In addition, Henderson engaged in online chats with an individual from Los Angeles, referring to the victim as a “super sexy boy” and claiming he was “having fun” with him. These revelations painted a picture of a man deeply involved in child exploitation and abuse.
The victim, who was only a young boy at the time, was subjected to manipulative tactics, including being bought gift cards by Henderson to entice him into sexual acts. The young boy later disclosed that Henderson showed him adult gay pornography and child pornography involving an adult male and a young boy, which he found disturbing and confusing. His mother, in a heartfelt victim impact statement read aloud in Newcastle Crown Court, expressed her devastation and horror upon learning of the abuse. She described how her son’s behavior had changed dramatically, now displaying signs of confusion, distress, and even drawing disturbing pictures with themes of hate and death.
She questioned Henderson directly, asking, “How could you sexually abuse my son? What have you done to him? What if he becomes a sex offender, copying you?” Her words reflected the profound trauma inflicted upon her family. The mother also expressed her fears for her son’s future, worried about the lasting psychological scars and the potential for her son to follow in Henderson’s footsteps.
The father’s statement echoed these sentiments, revealing his heartbreak and anger. He described how his son’s behavior had deteriorated, becoming confrontational, and how he believed Henderson’s vile actions had robbed his child of innocence. The father expressed a sense of failure for not being able to protect his son fully and voiced his disgust and hatred for Henderson, emphasizing the lifelong scars left by the abuse.
Henderson’s criminal conduct was further substantiated by the evidence collected during the investigation. The military police found chat logs with a man from Los Angeles, where Henderson admitted to “having fun” with the victim and referred to him as “super sexy.” The prosecution’s case was strengthened by the victim’s account, which detailed how Henderson bought him gift cards to facilitate sexual activities and showed him explicit material.
Prosecutor Ian Mullarkey outlined the severity of Henderson’s crimes, stating that he showed the boy adult gay porn and child pornography, which shocked the young victim. Henderson was ultimately charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and making indecent images of children. The court heard that Henderson had admitted to eight counts of rape, four sexual assaults, and two counts of possessing indecent images, with the offences spanning from August 2016 to February 2019.
In March 2019, Henderson appeared via video link from HMP Durham, where he pleaded guilty to the charges. His pleas included two counts of raping and one count of sexually assaulting a child aged eight, between August 2016 and May 2017; two counts of raping and one of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old, between May 2017 and May 2018; and two counts of raping and one of sexually assaulting a ten-year-old, between May 2018 and February 2019. He also admitted to making indecent photographs of children during the same period but denied distributing such images.
Judge Julie Clemitison sentenced Henderson to 14 years in prison, emphasizing the devastating impact on the young victim and his family. She described Henderson’s actions as “utterly selfish and utterly vile,” and highlighted the high risk Henderson poses for further offenses. The judge ordered Henderson to sign the sex offenders register for life, imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, and a restraining order to protect the victim’s family. She also pointed out that Henderson had used gift cards as a form of coercion, further illustrating his manipulative and predatory behavior.
Henderson’s case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers posed by individuals who may outwardly appear trustworthy but harbor dark and dangerous secrets. The community in Amble and Northumberland at large is left to grapple with the profound trauma inflicted by Henderson’s actions, and the court’s decision aims to ensure he remains under strict supervision to prevent further harm.
