JOHN DAVIES FROM AVONMOUTH BRISTOL JAILED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Avonmouth and Bristol, a local teaching assistant named John Davies, aged 48, has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in grooming and sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. The case highlights the serious breach of trust and the devastating impact of such misconduct.According to court records, Davies engaged in a pattern of manipulative behavior that spanned several months, during which he exchanged over 1,500 text messages with the young girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons. These messages included sexually explicit content, and the defendant used this communication to establish a false sense of intimacy and trust. The abuse escalated when Davies began physically touching the girl, initially by touching her leg, and later, when alone with her, he would inappropriately touch her private parts.
Davies’s actions were particularly egregious given his role in the community. As a chairman of the junior section of Avonmouth Old Boys RFC and a staff member at Henbury School in Bristol, he was entrusted with the welfare and protection of children. Despite this, he deliberately ignored the boundaries that should have been maintained between an adult and a minor. The court heard that Davies was aware of the appropriate conduct expected of him but chose to disregard these standards.
Concerns about Davies’s behavior had already been raised prior to his arrest. The school had issued him a formal written warning for unauthorized contact with female pupils via text messaging and social media platforms such as Facebook. Additionally, the rugby club had cautioned him regarding his conduct while coaching the under-15 girls’ team. Despite these warnings, Davies continued to target a girl who was not a pupil at the school nor a member of the rugby club, manipulating her into sexual activity.
The court was informed that Davies’s misconduct included attempts to isolate the girl, ensuring they were alone so he could carry out his inappropriate actions. When the girl expressed her awareness that she would not turn 16 for several months, Davies responded dismissively, saying, “That’s too long,” before proceeding with further inappropriate contact. The abuse persisted until the girl confided in her mother, which led to police involvement and subsequent charges.
During the trial, Davies admitted to sending the large volume of texts but initially denied any sexual activity. His defense argued that he had a distorted perception of his actions, claiming that he believed it was acceptable to pursue a relationship with a girl just under the age of consent. The defense also emphasized that Davies had not threatened the girl and that she had sometimes invited him to see her, suggesting a complex and troubling dynamic.
Judge Martin Picton sentenced Davies to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to eight charges related to sexual activity with a minor. The judge also ordered Davies to register as a sex offender indefinitely, barring him from working with children ever again. Furthermore, he was issued a ten-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits any unsupervised contact—whether physical or online—with girls under 16.
Detective Constable Andy Fox, from Bristol’s Operation Bluestone sex crime unit, commented on the case, emphasizing the gravity of Davies’s betrayal of trust. “The sentence handed to John Davies today highlights the serious nature of his crimes and the abuse of his position of trust,” Fox stated. “He deliberately sought opportunities to spend time alone with his victim to carry out his abuse. The courage of the girl in coming forward was instrumental in securing this conviction. Her bravery will help prevent others from suffering similar harm. We want victims to know that we will listen, investigate thoroughly, and support them through the process.”
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safeguarding in communities, especially when individuals in positions of authority abuse their roles for personal gratification. The community of Avonmouth and Bristol will undoubtedly be affected by this case, but the justice served aims to reinforce the message that such misconduct will not be tolerated.
