A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment following the murder of his 81-year-old wife who was asleep at the time.Jean Chapman was found dead in their bedroom on Vista Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on June 12.
The presiding judge at Chelmsford Crown Court described the assault as a "brutal, sustained attack on a defenseless woman who had no chance as she slept." John Chapman, aged 72, admitted to the killing and received a minimum term of 16 years in prison.
Prosecutor Andrew Jackson explained that Chapman murdered his wife by hitting her in the head with a wooden vase and then strangling her.
During police questioning, Chapman reportedly said, "there have been problems, I’ve been trying to kill myself but I couldn’t do it as I was thinking about what she would do when I’m gone." When officers arrived at the scene, Chapman was sitting on a sofa in the lounge, with his wife’s body found in the bedroom.
A post-mortem confirmed she died from severe head injuries.
The court described the murder as "savage and brutal." It was also revealed that the couple had been married for more than 35 years, and Jean Chapman was a grandmother with two sons from an earlier marriage.
Judge Charles Gratwicke highlighted the extreme violence of the attack, while police noted Chapman’s failure to provide an explanation for his actions despite admitting to the killing.
The case has been characterized as a domestic homicide involving significant violence and sentencing consequences.
