MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON WOMEN
An offshore worker who assaulted two women in Orkney and posed a danger to their lives has received a four-year prison sentence.Joe Drever, aged 25, was convicted of attacking the women physically and sexually in 2023, following a court trial this year.
At Edinburgh's High Court, Judge Lord Harrower noted that the crimes caused psychological harm to both victims and indicated that only a substantial prison term was appropriate.
Testimony revealed that Drever assaulted his first victim in Kirkwall.
During an act of consensual sex, he asked to use a dressing gown tie around her neck.
She consented and requested it not be tight, but he tightened it significantly, restricting her breathing and causing her to pass out with injuries suggestive of blood vessel rupture.
In a different incident, the jury heard that Drever met another woman at a bar, went to her home, and then began to choke her, pinning her on the bed and attempting to kiss her.
She tried to resist but ultimately lost consciousness.
Frances Connor, representing the defense, mentioned that Drever felt remorse and shame for his conduct.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
