PETER CLEGG SENTENCED IN ORKNEY FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND PHOTOGRAPHY CRIMES

A man named Peter Clegg has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of a series of heinous crimes involving a young girl in Orkney. The offences include molestation, photographing the victim inappropriately, and a range of sexual assaults that spanned several years.

Clegg, aged 71 and formerly residing in Wick, was brought to trial at the High Court in Inverness, where he was convicted of multiple serious charges. The court heard that Clegg had subjected the young girl to a disturbing pattern of abuse starting from when she was just six years old. The abuse continued over a period of years, with Clegg also being convicted of sexually assaulting the girl between January 2019 and September 2020.

In addition to the assault charges, Clegg was found guilty of possessing indecent photographs of a child as well as creating such images. The severity of the crimes was underscored by the presiding judge at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Sandison, who emphasized that the defendant's actions represented a wide-ranging and deeply disturbing breach of trust and safety.

Lord Sandison stated, "You subjected her to a wide range of sexual assaults. It is plain these offences cannot adequately be reflected other than by way of a custodial sentence." The judge further ordered that Clegg would be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

Inspector Caroline Mackay from the police force commented on the case, describing Clegg's conduct as "utterly appalling" and labeling him a predator. She reaffirmed the police's commitment to protecting children from sexual exploitation and urged anyone who has been a victim or who suspects someone might be a victim to come forward. Mackay assured the public that all reports would be handled with the utmost sensitivity and investigated thoroughly by specially trained officers, with the goal of bringing offenders like Clegg to justice and safeguarding vulnerable children.
