JOAO GOMES SENTENCED IN JERSEY FOR SEXUAL GROOMING ATTEMPT
In a recent development in Jersey’s ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, 27-year-old Joao Manuel Mendonca Gomes has been brought before the court to face serious allegations related to attempted sexual grooming.Gomes pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following efforts to engage in sexual activities with a minor he believed to be a teenage boy.
The incident took place in St Helier, where Gomes had arranged to meet what he thought was a 14-year-old boy, but in reality, the meeting was orchestrated by Cheyenne, a dedicated female paedophile hunter operating undercover online.
Cheyenne, a mother of two, has been actively working to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to exploit children on the internet.
Her undercover operations have successfully led to the arrest and prosecution of multiple offenders this year alone.
She has posed as a teenage girl or boy on various adult dating platforms, aiming to catch predators in the act.
Her efforts have not only resulted in the conviction of offenders like Gomes but also in the collection of intelligence on other suspects, including three men based in the United Kingdom, who are currently under investigation by authorities.
Gomes’s case was heard in the Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted to the charges of attempting to meet a child for sexual purposes.
The court was informed that conversations between Gomes and the undercover agent took place between November 26 and November 30.
During this period, Gomes believed he was communicating with a teenage boy and had arranged a meeting.
However, when he arrived at the designated location, he was met by law enforcement officers instead of the minor he thought he was meeting.
Legal representatives, including Susie Sharpe, explained that Gomes’s actions were part of a pattern of online grooming attempts.
The court was told that Gomes was released on bail but will face sentencing next month.
As part of his sentence, Gomes has been placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for five years and received a six-month prison term.
This case echoes previous incidents involving Jersey residents caught in similar online entrapments.
Earlier this year, 48-year-old Jason Bushell Sutton was sentenced to ten months in prison after attempting to meet what he believed was a teenage boy in a public parking lot for sexual activity.
Sutton was caught in the act by Cheyenne, who had been waiting nearby in a parked car and documented the encounter with photographs, which were subsequently handed over to police.
Additionally, Cheyenne played a role in apprehending Romanian hotel worker Alecsandru-Moise Buta, 19, who was sentenced to 180 hours of community service after initially engaging with a teenage girl.
When Buta inquired if the girl was ‘horny,’ Cheyenne took over the chat, exposing his intentions.
She emphasized that online grooming remains a persistent threat, stating, ‘There is always someone out there who wants to groom a child and there will always be more.’ Her relentless efforts continue to serve as a warning to potential offenders that law enforcement and vigilant citizens are actively working to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
