JEREMY DAY SENTENCED IN WARWICK FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL
In August 2017, a court sentenced Jeremy Day, a retired teacher from Nursery Avenue, Walsall, to four and a half years in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl.
The court heard that Day, aged 72, had initially assaulted the girl in the 1990s while allegedly trying to comfort her after she was upset about a funeral.
Prosecutor Miss Lynette McClement stated that during the first incident, Day put his arms around her shoulder to console her and then inappropriately touched her under her skirt.
The court was also told that Day committed two more serious sexual assaults after offering the girl a lift to her home.
Instead of taking her straight home, Day drove her to Slacky Lane, a secluded area bordered by trees.
There, he stopped the car and asked her to move to the front seat, before subjecting her to sexual assault.
The victim recounted in court: “He was talking to me and took off his seatbelt and turned to face me.
He touched the side of my face with his fingertips.
I tried to shuffle further back.” The second incident reportedly followed a similar pattern.
Day denied the charges, but the jury convicted him after a trial.
During sentencing, Judge Barry Berlin read parts of the victim’s impact statement, in which she directly addressed Day: “What you did to me has not just affected my life; it has taken over and controlled it.
The way I have lived my life has been dictated by you.
Because of this, I don’t let men get close to me.” Judge Berlin emphasized that the victim was particularly vulnerable due to her personal circumstances, noting, “You knew about those and took advantage of them.” Day was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
