JEFFREY MILLS FROM WESTERHOPE SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON TEENAGE BABYSITTER IN NEWCASTLE
In April 2014, a disturbing incident unfolded in Newcastle involving Jeffrey Mills, a man from Westerhope, who subjected a teenage girl to a terrifying and violent assault while she was babysitting. The young girl, who was caring for a baby at a residence in Newcastle, found herself in a life-threatening situation when Mills suddenly attacked her, leaving her traumatized and fearing for her life. The court heard that Mills, 27 years old and residing on Briarside in Westerhope, launched his assault while the girl was feeding the baby. Despite her efforts to maintain composure and care for the infant, Mills unexpectedly pounced on her, attempting to kiss her and placing his hand down her trousers. The teenage girl tried to push him away, but Mills responded with brutal force, tightening his grip around her neck and choking her until she lost consciousness.
After she blacked out, she awoke to a distressing scene: her trousers and underwear had been pulled down, and the baby was crying on the floor nearby. The girl, in a state of shock and fear, managed to make a harrowing 999 call, during which she expressed her conviction that Mills intended to kill her. Her account of the attack detailed the severity of her injuries, which included bruising to her neck, shoulder, arm, face, and inside her eyelids caused by strangulation. She also sustained grazes to her lips and a carpet burn on her back.
The court was informed that Mills had a history of violence, including an incident where he attacked three members of his own family with a knife. The prosecution described him as a dangerous individual, and the judge agreed, sentencing him to six years and eight months in prison. As part of his sentence, Mills was ordered to register as a sex offender.
The victim, who was left deeply traumatized by the ordeal, provided a victim impact statement read aloud in court. She expressed ongoing fears and reflections on the attack, stating, “I think about it every day, I often think about what I could have done to change things. I get terrified someone else will assault me like he did.” Her words underscored the lasting emotional scars inflicted by Mills’ violent actions.
During the court proceedings, Mills pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and sexual assault. Initially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted rape, he accepted lesser charges. The judge, Recorder Ben Nolan, emphasized the danger Mills poses to society, highlighting the need for his incarceration. Defense attorney Anne Richardson acknowledged that Mills’ family does not condone his actions but continues to support him despite the severity of his crimes.
