JAVED MIH IN OLDHAM SEXUAL ASSAULT SCANDAL: OFFENDER AVOIDS JAIL DESPITE ATTACK ON WOMAN WALKING HOME
In December 2018, a disturbing incident unfolded on the streets of Oldham, Greater Manchester, involving a 23-year-old man named Javed Miah. The victim, a woman walking alone after her shift, was unexpectedly ambushed by Miah, who forcibly engaged in sexual misconduct against her.
The assault took place in broad daylight, leaving the woman visibly shaken and traumatized.
According to reports, Miah suddenly appeared behind her on the street, bumping into her and causing her to lose her breath out of fear.
The woman, who works as a store assistant in Oldham, recounted that she immediately recognized Miah as someone she knew from school, although he was younger than her.
The encounter escalated quickly as Miah continued to follow her for about a minute before approaching her directly.
He then groped her buttocks, shocking her and causing her to protest that his actions were inappropriate.
In a state of shock, the woman’s mind froze, and she found herself on the ground, with Miah’s arms around her chest.
Despite her distress, she managed to retrieve her mobile phone and activate the emergency SOS function, which allowed her to call 999.
The loud beeping noise from her phone alerted nearby individuals, and Miah fled the scene down an alleyway, fearing capture.
Fortunately, police officers apprehended him later that day.
During police interviews, Miah chose not to comment on the incident.
The prosecution detailed the victim’s account, emphasizing her fear and the suddenness of the attack.
Prosecutor Peter Conroy described how the victim was left unable to leave her house or go to work following the assault, expressing her ongoing fear of walking alone and her reliance on friends and family for transportation.
At Tameside Magistrates’ Court, Miah pleaded guilty to sexual assault.
His defense lawyer, Saul Comish, argued that the attack was opportunistic and highlighted Miah’s employment as a takeaway worker, where he works from 4 PM to 11 PM.
The lawyer also pointed out that Miah is married and a father to a four-year-old child, emphasizing the potential impact of a custodial sentence on his family’s livelihood.
Despite admitting guilt, Miah was spared immediate imprisonment.
Instead, he was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid community work, pay costs amounting to £213, and register as a sex offender for the next seven years.
The court’s decision reflects a balance between accountability and consideration of his personal circumstances, but the trauma inflicted on the victim remains a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding sexual violence in Oldham and beyond.
