JASON SUTTON CAUGHT IN JERSEY: PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED AFTER ONLINE PREDATION IN GROUNDLEIGH AND PATRIOTIC STREET

In December 2017, a disturbing case of online grooming and attempted sexual predation unfolded in Jersey, culminating in the arrest and sentencing of Jason Sutton, a 48-year-old man from Grouville.

Sutton’s actions came to light after he engaged in a series of explicit online exchanges with what he believed was a 15-year-old boy, with the intent of arranging a sexual encounter in a public car park.

Using the gay dating website Grindr, Sutton initiated contact with the supposed teenager, who was actually a vigilant online activist posing as a minor.

The covert operation was orchestrated by Cheyenne O’Connor, a 24-year-old mother of two, who had previously been involved in similar sting operations targeting online predators in Jersey.

O’Connor’s efforts proved instrumental in catching Sutton, who was waiting at the designated meeting point in the Patriotic Street car park when she photographed him from a concealed location.

Following the encounter, O’Connor provided police with photographic evidence and transcripts of their online conversations.

Sutton was swiftly arrested shortly thereafter.

During police interviews, Sutton admitted to attempting to groom the individual he believed was a teenage boy.

The court proceedings revealed that Sutton had made numerous inappropriate remarks online, explicitly expressing his desire to meet for sexual activity.

He had also requested the minor to wear tracksuit bottoms, allegedly to facilitate quick and easy sexual contact, according to prosecutor Susie Sharpe.

The court heard that the online exchanges rapidly escalated, with Sutton indicating his intent not only to meet but to engage in sexual acts.

The ‘boy’ had informed Sutton that he was still in school and would not turn 16 until the following September.

Despite this, Sutton persisted in arranging the meeting, which was ultimately thwarted when a member of the public, who had initiated contact with Sutton, took a photograph of him at the scene.

Sutton was arrested on October 24 and immediately admitted to the police his involvement.

His defense lawyer, Advocate Sue Pearmain, explained that Sutton was caught in a sting operation carried out over three days—Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

She noted that on Tuesday, the individual communicating with Sutton disclosed that the ‘boy’ was 15 and would not be 16 for nearly a year.

Pearmain described the photograph of the ‘boy’ as a temptation that Sutton succumbed to while under the influence of alcohol, which she claimed he had been drinking excessively at the time.

During the court hearing, it was revealed that Sutton had a responsible job, which he had since lost, and was in a long-term, stable relationship with his civil partner.

His references from his employer were excellent, and he was assessed as being at a relatively low risk of reoffending.

The court also learned that Sutton intended to sell his Jersey home and move back to the UK after 20 years on the island.

Magistrate David Le Cornu acknowledged the mitigating factors, including Sutton’s good character, remorse, and stable personal life.

However, he emphasized that these considerations did not outweigh the seriousness of the offense, and he sentenced Sutton to ten months in prison.

Additionally, Sutton was ordered to register as a sex offender and was banned from being alone with any boy under 16 for five years.

In a related case earlier that year, Sutton’s predatory behavior was exposed by Cheyenne O’Connor, who had previously caught another Jersey teenager attempting to meet a girl online.

O’Connor’s vigilant efforts highlight the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of community involvement in safeguarding minors.

Cheyenne expressed her commitment to continuing her online activism, warning that many men in Jersey and beyond are actively seeking to groom children on various platforms.

She stated, ‘If someone is reading this and they think they can go on the internet and groom children, they should know that I will make it my mission to catch you,’ underscoring her dedication to protecting vulnerable youths from exploitation.
