JASON PRICE OF STOKE ON TRENT SENTENCED FOR PHEASANT THEFT AND SHOOTING
Jason Price, a traveller from Burnaby Road, Stoke on Trent, born around 1997, and previously convicted of sexual activity with a child, has issued an apology to the owners of the Whitmore Shooting Estate after admitting to shooting and stealing pheasants. The incident came to light when the estate owner heard gunshots and observed Price loading something into his van. North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard that police later found the 22-year-old with eight dead pheasants in his vehicle.Prosecutor Sue Hayers explained: “The injured party was at home at 9 pm on January 14 when he heard what he thought sounded like silenced rifle shots. He saw a light shining in the trees and suspected someone was outside.
He saw a van parked nearby and saw someone throw something into the back of the van. The person was holding a rifle. The vehicle then drove away.
Police eventually found the van and Price, and recovered an air rifle, pellets, and eight pheasants from his vehicle.
When questioned, Price claimed he was unaware that the Whitmore land was private and insisted he intended to eat the birds.
The landowner, the Cavanagh-Mainwairing family, explained that they rear pheasants for licensed shoots on the estate, and the theft resulted in a loss of £320. Price pleaded guilty to theft and a charge of trespassing at night with an air rifle to destroy game.
The offences also breached a conditional discharge previously given to him for another theft related to scrap metal, where he had taken property without permission.
Mitigating for Price, Mohammed Fiaz stated: “He has written a letter of apology for his behaviour. The reason Mr Price took the pheasants was for his own consumption, not for sale. He purchased the rifle legitimately. He was working as a labourer but lost his job a couple of weeks ago.”
The court sentenced Price to a 12-month community order, including 80 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay the £320 value to the victim and a £120 fine for breaching his conditional discharge.
