UK SENTENCES BRITISH MAN FOR ATTACK IN MARBELLA
Jason McInerney, a British citizen aged 36 from Chessington, was sentenced to nine years in prison in the UK after pleading guilty to a serious assault committed against his former partner in Spain. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), through the British Embassy in Madrid, confirmed the sentencing.
The incident occurred in Marbella in July 2023, where McInerney assaulted his ex-partner, a woman from Hertfordshire.
During the attack, he stabbed her in the leg, and an even more alarming sequence followed: the woman, severely injured and fearing for her life, was thrown from a vehicle traveling at approximately 70 miles per hour and was dragged along the road while McInerney held onto her arm.
She managed to escape from the car and was helped by a local citizen, who took her to a beach bar.
The police were contacted from there.
At the time of the attack, McInerney still possessed his belongings and his passport.
The woman flew back to the UK on July 10 with the aid of the British Consulate in Malaga.
Hertfordshire Police met her at the airport and took her to hospital, where she was found to have friction burns, a leg cut, and fractures to her spine.
While McInerney initially stayed in Spain, he later returned to the UK; however, the evidence remained with Spanish authorities.
An agreement was reached between UK prosecutors and Spanish officials to utilize the evidence for litigation in the United Kingdom.
The case was supported by security footage captured from various locations, such as a pharmacy and a beach club, as well as medical reports and testimonies provided by the victim both in the Spanish court and the UK police investigations.
McInerney admitted to the charge of causing grievous bodily harm in Spain, and the sentence was announced yesterday at St Albans Crown Court.
