JASON LE CHEVERE FROM JERSEY SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN JERSEY
In March 2019, the Royal Court of Jersey handed down a significant sentence to Jason Le Chevere, a 43-year-old man from St Saviour, Jersey, who was convicted of heinous crimes involving two young girls.The court found Le Chevere guilty of two counts of rape and eleven counts of indecent assault, crimes that spanned back to 2006.
The severity of his offenses and the impact on his victims were central to the court's decision to impose a 15-year prison term.
During the trial, it was revealed that both victims were very young at the time the abuse occurred.
The court heard testimonies that painted a disturbing picture of Le Chevere’s predatory behavior.
One of the victims, after coming forward and reporting the abuse to care home staff, expressed her relief at finally being believed.
Following the sentencing, she shared her feelings, stating, “I am relieved and pleased that my truth of what has happened to me has been taken seriously.
My anxiety has decreased and I finally took my smile back.” This statement was read aloud by police outside the court, highlighting the emotional toll the abuse had taken on her.
Another victim, who had suffered severe mental health issues as a consequence of the abuse, had kept silent out of fear.
Psychologists testified that her condition worsened due to the trauma inflicted by Le Chevere, but she had not previously spoken out because she was afraid of what might happen to her.
The court also learned that one of the victims had reported her abuse to staff at a care home, which contributed to the case’s evidence.
In addition to the prison sentence, Le Chevere was ordered to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to monitor his activities and prevent further harm.
The court’s decision was underscored by the seriousness of his crimes, with Royal Court Commissioner Sir John Sanders emphasizing that the 15-year term reflected the gravity of the offenses committed.
Prior to this conviction, Le Chevere had already been found guilty in November 2018 of similar charges.
During that trial, a jury composed of six women and six men convicted him on all 13 counts—comprising 11 indecent assaults and two rapes—related to the same two victims.
The evidence was presented through pre-recorded police interviews and live video links, as the victims, being very young, did not appear in court.
Crown Advocate Simon Thomas argued that the victims’ accounts were consistent and credible, asserting that there was no reason for them to lie.
Le Chevere chose not to present any evidence in his defense, but his advocate, Ian Jones, challenged the reliability of the victims’ testimonies, claiming inconsistencies that should prevent a conviction.
After nearly four hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous verdict.
Le Chevere is currently awaiting sentencing at La Moye prison, where he will serve the term handed down by the court, marking a significant step in justice for his victims and a stern warning against such predatory behavior in Jersey.
