MAN JAILED AFTER BITTEN ON EAR DURING SWANSEA STREET FIGHT
A man who attempted to intervene during a street altercation was bitten on the ear.
Jason Beech, aged 53, had been consuming alcohol in the St George pub in Swansea on July 12.
After receiving a phone call from his former partner, Beech agreed to meet her nearby for shopping.
When she saw him outside the pub, she accused him of drinking, which he denied.
A dispute erupted between them in the street, witnessed by another individual, Mr Ali.
When Mr Ali tried to intervene, Beech responded by telling him to “f*** off.” Mr Ali then confronted Beech, and a fight ensued.
During the altercation, Beech bit Mr Ali's ear.
The victim required medical treatment at Morriston Hospital.
In court, Beech claimed he "did not want to cause injury," and was just trying to "get him off me." Defence barrister Alycia Carpanini stated that Beech was "sorry for what happened and is embarrassed" and wished to apologize.
She added that at the time, Beech’s mother had recently died, making the situation difficult for him.
Beech admitted to inflicting grievous bodily harm and faced sentencing before His Honour Judge Paul Thomas KC.
The judge remarked that “Your response was excessive.
Mr Ali threw the first blow but when you responded you went right over the top.” Beech was sentenced to 40 weeks in prison for grievous bodily harm and an additional 12 weeks for breaching a previous suspended sentence, with both sentences running concurrently.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge within six months of release and to be subject to a restraining order for three years.
