TRAINEE DOCTOR CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN CARMARTHEN
In a case that has shocked the community, Jamil Rehman, a 35-year-old trainee doctor from Derby, was caught attempting to meet a fictitious 15-year-old girl in Carmarthen, West Wales. The incident unfolded in April 2019 when Rehman travelled over four hours from his home in Derby to the Welsh town, believing he was about to engage in sexual activity with a teenage girl he had been communicating with online.
Unbeknownst to Rehman, he was interacting with decoys set up by vigilant paedophile hunting groups.
These groups had created fake profiles, including one purporting to be a 15-year-old girl named Kayla and another claiming to be a 13-year-old girl named Sienna.
Rehman engaged in conversations with both profiles, expressing a desire to meet and spend time with them.
According to court reports, Rehman had booked a hotel room in Carmarthen, intending to meet the girl in person.
Police investigations revealed that he had also purchased red roses and pills designed to delay orgasm, which were found in his vehicle during a search.
Rehman claimed that his intentions were innocent, asserting that he wanted the girl to serve as a tour guide and show him the beaches of West Wales.
He explained that he thought the online chat was with a girl named Sienna, a misunderstanding he attributed to confusing the word “restaurant” with “hotel.” However, the evidence presented in Swansea Crown Court painted a different picture.
Prosecutors highlighted that Rehman had been in contact with two online profiles, both of which were decoys.
The messages exchanged indicated a level of intimacy, with Rehman offering to take the girls on trips and describing his car as waiting for them.
The court also noted that Rehman’s hobby of driving was used as a pretext to justify his willingness to travel long distances for the meetings.
During the trial, Rehman maintained that he had no malicious intent, claiming he was concerned for the girls’ welfare and was confused about the nature of the online interactions.
He insisted that he only wanted to meet the 15-year-old girl to act as a guide during his visit.
Nevertheless, the jury found him guilty of attempting to meet a girl under 16 for sexual purposes, grooming, and attempting to arrange a child sex offence.
Judge Paul Thomas sentenced Rehman to 20 months in prison, describing his explanations as “frankly ludicrous” and emphasising the seriousness of his offending.
The judge pointed out that Rehman, as a trainee doctor, would have been aware of the potential harm his actions could cause, yet he continued to pursue these interactions.
Rehman’s nationality is Pakistani, and he was in the UK on a work visa, which will now be revoked, preventing him from practicing medicine in the future.
Judge Thomas also ordered Rehman to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years.
He expressed regret that Rehman’s career and personal life would be significantly impacted by his actions, noting that his years of hard work had been destroyed.
The judge criticised Rehman’s conduct during the trial, describing his behaviour as a mixture of arrogance and hypocritical outbursts, and stated that there was no realistic prospect of rehabilitation.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors.
