JAMIE SEWELL FROM EASINGTON COLLIERY SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND INDECENT PHOTOGRAPHS OF TEENAGE GIRL IN DURHAM
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Easington Colliery, Jamie Sewell has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of heinous crimes involving a 14-year-old girl. The incident, which took place following a night of heavy drinking, was detailed during a court hearing at Durham Crown Court, revealing the disturbing nature of Sewell's actions.Prosecutor Michael Graham outlined the sequence of events, stating that Sewell had removed part of the girl’s lower clothing and used his mobile phone to take explicit photographs of her. The court was told that after capturing these images, Sewell proceeded to engage in penetrative sex with the young victim. The girl, who was only 14 at the time, estimated that the entire ordeal lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes, a period marked by trauma and violation.
Initially, Sewell denied having any sexual contact with the girl. However, subsequent DNA testing provided conclusive evidence, leading him to admit to the sexual assault. Sewell, aged 29 and residing on Easington Street in Easington Colliery, faced charges of rape and three counts of making indecent photographs of a child. His admission of guilt on these charges resulted in his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
During mitigation, Jane Waugh, representing Sewell, highlighted that her client had no previous criminal record relevant to such offenses and emphasized that this was his first experience of incarceration. She also mentioned that Sewell had been diagnosed with depression while on remand and had used his time in prison constructively by completing an alcohol detoxification program.
Judge Peter Kelson QC delivered the sentence, condemning Sewell’s actions as a gross violation of the young girl’s privacy and dignity. The judge stated, “You took advantage of this young girl to satisfy your lustful desires. So it was that you raped her and took photographs of her private parts which was, in itself, a gross invasion of her privacy.” The judge also referenced the victim’s personal statement, describing it as a “heart-rending document” and emphasizing the lasting damage caused by Sewell’s perversion.
As part of his sentence, Sewell was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 16. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at protecting the community from further harm.
