JAMIE CARTER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN ASHBOURNE AND MATLOCK

In December 2012, a disturbing case involving a young girl and a man from the Derbyshire area culminated in a prison sentence for the offender. Jamie Carter, aged 29, was convicted of a series of sexual offences committed against a female under the age of 16, with the incidents spanning several months and involving a girl who was initially 14 and later turned 15.

At Derby Crown Court, Carter pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual activity with a minor. The offences took place while Carter was residing in Matlock, a town in Derbyshire, but he had more recently moved to Brookside Meadows in Ashbourne. The case revealed a troubling pattern of predatory behavior, with Carter engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with the young girl over an extended period.

The victim, who was only 14 at the start of the abuse and later turned 15, documented each encounter on her mobile phone by recording them on her calendar. This evidence played a crucial role in the case, as officers presented explicit text messages that Carter had sent to the girl during the investigation. Initially, Carter claimed that these messages were merely jokes, attempting to downplay the severity of his actions.

During the court proceedings, Nicholas Worsley, representing Carter, argued that the interactions between the defendant and the girl had been fully consensual at some stages. Worsley claimed that the girl had expressed a desire to engage in full sexual intercourse, but Carter had not permitted this to happen. The defense also highlighted that Carter was under the influence of the drug MCat at the time of the offences, suggesting that his judgment was impaired.

Worsley stated, “He was using unlawful drugs and they had affected his judgement to the seriousness of the offences. He’s devastated by what he has done. He accepts his stupidity.”

However, Judge Timothy Spencer QC emphasized the gravity of the case, describing the conduct as serious and highlighting the prolonged exploitation of a vulnerable girl. The judge noted that the offences spanned over ten months and involved the initial victimization of a 14-year-old girl who later turned 15.

As a result of his conviction, Jamie Carter was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual offences prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years, restricting his contact with minors and imposing other restrictions aimed at preventing further harm. The case underscores the importance of safeguarding minors and the serious consequences faced by those who exploit them.
