--------------------------- 2025-10-08 16:17: 2003: Law enforcement officials in Lancaster expressed their gratitude to the public for assisting in the apprehension of a sexual offender over two years after the crime occurred.
The investigation that resulted in James Watters being sentenced to seven years in prison on the preceding Friday is considered one of the most significant in the history of the city.
Originally from Lancaster, Watters was only identified as the perpetrator after he provided a DNA sample during his detention on charges unrelated to the attack.
Over 500 men submitted DNA samples at various points during the investigation, which was initiated after a woman was raped on 1 April 2001.
Watters, who was 22 years old and resided on Slaidburn Drive, admitted guilt to the charge during his court appearance at Preston Crown Court.
"Some relief" was expressed by investigators.
Residents living in the eastern part of Lancaster, where the victim's community is located, were deeply shaken by the assault.
It took nearly 20 months from the time of the assault before Watters was detained.
Detective Chief Inspector Martin Leveridge indicated that the DNA sample provided by Watters was instrumental in breaking the case.
He remarked that finally identifying the attacker has provided some comfort to the victim as she begins to come to terms with her trauma.
