JAMES SUTTON FROM BARNSEY INVOLVED IN DISTURBING ONLINE RELATIONSHIP WITH YORK TEENAGER

In June 2013, a disturbing case emerged involving James Sutton, a teacher from Barnsley, who became entangled in a troubling online relationship with a 13-year-old girl from York. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the serious nature of the offences and the implications for both the victim and the offender.

James Sutton, aged 27 at the time, faced the court after admitting to possessing nine indecent photographs of the York teenager. The case was heard at York Crown Court, where the judge described Sutton’s actions as a grave breach of professional and moral boundaries, emphasizing that such conduct was essentially a form of “professional suicide.”

According to court proceedings, Sutton and the young girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, initiated their online interaction in early 2012. The connection was sparked after Sutton responded to a profile she had created on a dating website. Over the course of several weeks, the two exchanged numerous photographs, and the girl even sent Sutton a sexual video of herself. Sutton later told police that the relationship eventually “fizzled out,” but not before crossing significant boundaries.

Prosecutor Paul Cleasby highlighted that Sutton failed to end the relationship even after the girl confided in him about her personal struggles, including living with her parents and being bullied at school. Sutton described himself as “a lonely and isolated man who was flattered by the attention,” which appeared to influence his continued engagement with the girl. Investigators revealed that Sutton had deleted all communications, photographs, and videos related to the girl prior to his arrest, and there was no evidence suggesting he had sought out other indecent images of children. This deletion was seen as an attempt to conceal his activities.

During the court hearing, Sutton’s defense, represented by Rebecca Stevens, characterized the case as “tragic,” attributing the behavior to loneliness and isolation rather than any predatory intent towards young girls. Supporters of Sutton had submitted letters to the court describing him as “an understanding teacher, a supportive friend, honest, caring, but also naive and having an innocent vulnerability.”

Judge Stephen Ashurst, the Recorder of York, delivered the sentence, which included a three-year community supervision order and a five-year sexual offences prevention order. This order grants authorities the authority to monitor Sutton’s internet usage closely. Additionally, Sutton was disqualified from working with children and ordered to participate in a three-year sexual offenders’ rehabilitation program.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Ashurst emphasized the gravity of Sutton’s actions, stating, “What is quite clear is that when you carried on that correspondence, in March and April 2012, you must have known that you were committing professional suicide.” The judge acknowledged that Sutton’s reputation would be tarnished for a long time but offered him an opportunity for rehabilitation under strict supervision. He also warned Sutton that if discovered, the consequences could be severe, underscoring the seriousness of the criminal conduct involved.
