MAN SENTENCED AFTER STARBUCKS SEX ASSAULT AND THREATS
A man named James Shewan has been sentenced to 58 weeks in prison for engaging in a disturbing incident inside Elgin’s Starbucks. He approached two young women whom he did not know, sat with them, and began making inappropriate sexual remarks.
According to reports, Shewan grabbed one of the women and unlawfully touched her chest by putting his hands inside her clothes, while also making a threatening comment to the other woman, saying, "How about I rape you?".
Shewan appeared via video link before Inverness Sheriff Court, having pleaded guilty to charges including threatening behaviour, communicating indecently, and sexual assault related to this incident that took place on April 25.
The court papers specify that he made inappropriate comments about their appearances, discussed urinating in a sink, and asked one of the women to perform a sex act, further issuing the rape threat.
Additionally, he seized the hands of the other woman, rubbed them, touched her arms, and put his hands inside her upper clothing to touch her breasts.
His solicitor, Grant Daglish, expressed that Shewan was "quite disgusted with himself" and claimed alcohol and possibly a head injury contributed to his behaviour.
However, Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald condemned his actions as "revolting" and emphasized that Shewan had a history of sexual offending.
She sentenced him to 58 weeks in jail, effective from April 26, and ordered him to be registered on the sex offenders register for ten years.
